Power Take-Off (PTO)

•Power Take Off (PTO) is a mechanical device designed for transmitting power from the transmission to a hydraulic pump or compressor.

•The Power Take Off (PTO) must be purchased separately, and care is required to match the physical interface of the transmission with a compatible PTO. PTO is used in cases where superstructures need to be run. PTO is mounted on the main transmission of a truck.

•PTO is basically a small gearbox that connects the main transmission gear through a small opening on the main transmission. PTO units usually have 4, 6, 8, or 10 bolt connections. Mounting can be at the rear, left, right, bottom, or top of the transmission.

•PTO units are used in Dump Trucks, Tow Trucks, Refuse Trucks, Hook Loaders, Platform Vehicles, and Fuel Tankers. Some heavy-duty PTO units are used in Fire Fighting Trucks, Cleaning Combination Trucks, and Concrete Pumping Trucks. PTO units can have single or double output, depending on the hydraulic pump housing. Connection flanges can be 5462 DIN ISO, SAE-B 13T, SAE-BB 15T, SAE-C 14T, companion flange, or round key shaft mounting type.

The Power Take Off is engaged/disengaged using the main transmission clutch and a remote control mechanism which operates on the PTO itself. Typically, an air valve is used to engage the PTO, but a mechanical linkage, electric, or hydraulic mechanism are also options.
